What your result means
The value is what the gold in your piece is worth at the rate you entered: its weight in grams times the price of a gram at its purity. A jewellery price adds making charges, wastage, stones and tax on top, so it is higher than the gold value; an old-gold payout takes deductions off, so it is lower. The all-in price per gram lets you compare two shops on the same piece.
How to use the Gold Calculator
- Type today’s gold rate as your jeweller or market quotes it, and pick its unit (per tola, 10 grams, gram, troy ounce…) and karat. The rate for every karat and unit appears at once.
- Enter the weight of your gold in any unit, including tola, masha and ratti, and its purity.
- Choose Buying to add making charges and tax to a jewellery bill, or Selling to take off the buyer’s deduction, and read the result and the working.
Formula and worked example
price per gram of 24K = rate ÷ grams in the rate unit ÷ (rate karat ÷ 24)price per gram at your karat = price per gram of 24K × karat ÷ 24gold value = gold weight (g) × price per gram at your karatjewellery price = (gold value + wastage + making + other charges) × (1 + tax %)old gold payout = gold value − deduction1 tola = 180 grains = 11.6638 g; 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti; 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 g
Worked example (a made-up quote, to show the arithmetic): if 24K is PKR 400,000 per tola, one gram of 24K is PKR 400,000 ÷ 11.6638 = PKR 34,294, and 22K is PKR 34,294 × 22 ÷ 24 = PKR 31,436 a gram. A 22K chain of 2 tola 4 masha (27.216 g) holds PKR 855,556 of gold; with a 10% making charge the bill is PKR 941,111. Sold back with a deduction of 8 ratti per tola, the same chain fetches PKR 784,259.
Buying jewellery: making charges, wastage and tax
A jeweller’s price is more than the gold. The making charge pays for the work and is stated as a percentage of the gold value, an amount per gram or per tola, or a fixed sum. Some jewellers also charge wastage, extra gold for what is lost while making the piece, and many add stones, polish or a sales tax such as GST or VAT. Enter each one as your jeweller states it and the calculator shows the full bill and the all-in price per gram, so you can compare two shops on the same piece.
Selling old gold: why you get less than the rate
Buyers usually pay less than the day’s rate for old jewellery: they price it by its karat, take off the weight of stones, and deduct for melting, impurities and their margin. Ask the buyer how the deduction is worked out, as a percentage of the value or as ratti of weight per tola, and enter it to see what you should receive.

Karat ÷ 24. Hallmarks often give the same content in parts per thousand (750 = 75%).
Assumptions and limits
- The calculator has no live price feed. Rates change daily and differ by city and shop, so it uses the rate you type.
- 24K is treated as pure gold. Other karats are priced by gold content (karat ÷ 24); a shop may quote its own 22K or 21K rate, which you can enter directly.
- Masha and ratti use the traditional 12 masha to the tola and 8 ratti to the masha (96 ratti a tola). Local practice can differ, so check with your jeweller.
- Making charges in percent and wastage are taken on the gold value; tax is taken on the whole bill. Your jeweller may calculate them differently.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a tola of gold?
One tola is 180 grains troy, which is 11.6638 grams (often rounded to 11.66 g). A tola is traditionally divided into 12 masha and a masha into 8 ratti, so one masha is about 0.972 g and one ratti about 0.1215 g. Ten tola is 116.64 g.
Is an ounce of gold 28.35 or 31.10 grams?
Gold is priced by the troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams (480 grains). The everyday ounce used for food is 28.3495 grams. Using the everyday ounce for gold makes an ounce about 9% too light, so a value worked out with it comes out too low. This calculator always uses the troy ounce.
How do I work out the 22K or 21K gold rate from the 24K rate?
Multiply the 24K rate by the karat and divide by 24. 22K is 22 ÷ 24 = 91.67% gold, 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%. If 24K is 400,000 a tola, 22K works out to about 366,667 and 21K to 350,000. Some shops quote their own 22K or 21K rate; if yours does, enter that rate and pick its karat.
How are making charges and wastage added to a jewellery price?
Add the making charge (a percentage of the gold value, an amount per gram or per tola, or a fixed sum), any wastage, which is extra gold charged for loss in making, and stones or polish. Tax such as GST or VAT, if charged, goes on top of the whole bill. The calculator lists each part and the all-in price per gram, so you can compare jewellers.
How much will a jeweller pay for my old gold?
Usually less than the day’s rate. A buyer prices old jewellery by its karat, removes the weight of stones and deducts for melting, impurities and margin; the US National Institute of Standards and Technology notes that buyers’ offers usually reflect reductions for karat content and other factors. Enter the buyer’s deduction as a percentage or as ratti per tola to see what you should receive.
Why doesn’t this gold calculator show today’s gold price?
Gold rates change through the day and differ between cities, associations and shops, and a stale price is worse than none. Type the rate you were quoted by your jeweller or market, in whatever unit they use. To keep your rate and charges for later, bookmark the link from Copy link with these numbers.
